About Me.
Welcome! My name is Maggie Banks and I’m a licensed therapist dedicated to helping you navigate your mental health journey. I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from NYU and a background in Art and Psychology from Syracuse University. My education did not stop at graduate school and has continued to deepen the breath of work I practice in.
My approach to therapy is flexible and tailored to your unique needs, utilizing various treatment modalities, including Emotion-Focused Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). I believe that each client is different, and I work collaboratively with you to determine the best methods for addressing your symptoms and achieving your goals.
With over ten years of experience in acute crisis centers, group therapy and individual therapy my goal is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, develop coping strategies, and foster personal growth.
I’m passionate about empowering my clients on their path to healing and self-discovery. If you’re ready to take the next step, I look forward to working with you!
Evidence Based Therapy
ACT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a unique empirically based psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies, together with commitment and behavior change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility. Psychological flexibility means contacting the present moment fully as a conscious human being, and based on what the situation affords, changing or persisting in behavior in the service of chosen values.
DBT
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy (psychotherapy). It’s based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but it’s specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely.
“Dialectical” means combining opposite ideas. DBT focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors.
Dialectical behavior therapy was developed in the 1970s by Marsha Linehan, an American psychologist.
EFFT
Emotionally Focused Family Therapy ― follows the principles and practices of Emotionally Focused Therapy to restore connection and promote resilience in family relationships. The principle goal of EFFT is to re-establish more secure family patterns where attachment and caregiving responses are effective and emotional bonds are repaired. These resources inform a network of security that provides the flexibility and closeness necessary for families to promote individual growth and meaningful relationships across generations.
